Request to deploy ChatGPT (OpenAI) in workspace DAR-045

I am currently working on Natural language Processing in my workspace (DAR-045) and would like to deploy ChatGPT to support my project.

I am informed that I need to submit a request here to deploy an OpenAI tools as it is not avaiable in the SDE to my understanding.

If I could have this inside of the workspace it would help a lot. I'm not sure what alternatives are available, but running data embedded In code outside of the SDE would be difficult for me.

Hi Harry,

there are a couple of options here.

One is to use the AzureML service which is available in your workspace, then you can deploy various GPT models and access them directly in your workspace. We have limited experience with this, and there's a bit of a learning curve, but there are people who might be able to help us if you get stuck. Given that this service already exists in the SDE, this would be the direction to explore first. In your workspace, go to the 'Workspace Services' section, then 'Create New' and you can create an AzureML service from there.

A second option is that there is a new 'OpenAI' service for the SDE, but we haven't been able to deploy it yet and have even less experience with it. If the AzureML route proves too difficult or not suitable then we can try to get this deployed sooner.

Hi Tony, Thanks for getting back.

Yes, I created an Azure Machine Learning workspace in the early stages of exploring the SDE. Unfortunately, I was having trouble with using the ChatGPT 5 model whilst in the SDE on the Azure ML website. I also had trouble opening the VSCode and Jupyter applications in 'compute'.

I spoke with Andrew from the data science team to assist and he recommended against continuing in the Azure ML computer instance as I did not need to use it yet and would come at a costs whilst unused.

I am not in a particular hurry with OpenAI within the SDE. I will probably be looking to wrap up the project going into mid November, is that timeline very soon for deploying OpenAI ? Let me know and we can look into the Azure option.

Hi Harry, I hope we can have OpenAI in place by mid-November, yes. AzureML costs very little for the bare infrastructure, like <£1/day IIRC. It’s if you upload a lot of data, or run a lot of computations, that’s when the cost starts to climb. And you’d be paying those costs anyway with OpenAI, or any other ML platform. So I wouldn’t let cost put you off of trying it. If you want, I can add you to the recipients of the daily email for the cost breakdown of your workspace. That way, you can keep an eye on it for yourself. At the moment, only Kathryn and I get those emails. Apologies for the radio silence, I had been on sick leave in December and returned last week.

I'm looking to reopen my computer instance in AzureML. Could I have some help with the below :

1. Yes, Could I be added as one of the recipients included in the costs breakdown.
2. Is the new OpenAI Service with ChatGPT available to use in the workspace ?
3. Are there any guides/resources on how to navigate or troubleshoot AzureML inside the SDE ? I was having a lot of trouble beforehand.

Hi Harry, Sorry to hear you’ve been unwell, good to know you’re back on your feet. To answer your questions: 1. Done, you should start getting emails tomorrow morning. 2. Not yet, sorry. Other priorities have taken over lately. 3. We don’t have a guide yet. We have very little experience with it, either inside the SDE or out, so we’re rather relying on users, such as yourself, to try it out and help us learn how to use it.
