        <h3 id="search">Getting started with the search</h3>

                    of the Lexicon linguae Aethiopicae. We will go through most of the options
                    available to you.</p>

                <h4>Search</h4>
                <p>This app is built with exist-db, and uses Lucene as the standard search engine.
                    This comes with several options available. A full list is <a href="https://lucene.apache.org/core/2_9_4/queryparsersyntax.html#Fuzzy Searches" target="_blank">here</a>

                <h4>Input</h4>
                <p>If you want to transcribe some Fidal into Latin or update your transcription, you
                    can <a target="_blank" href="https://betamasaheft.github.io/transliteration/">have a go with our transcription tools</a>.</p>
                <p>If you are using the keyboard provided, please note that there are four layers,
                    the normal one and those activated by Shift, Alt, Alt+Shift.</p>
                <p>Normal and Shift contain mainly Fidal. Alt and Alt-Shift diacritics.</p>
                <p>To enter letters in Fidal and the diacritics with this keyboard, which is
                    independent of your local input selection, you can use two methods.</p>
                <h4>Keys Combinations</h4>
                <p>With this method you use keys combinations to trigger specific characters. <a target="_blank" href="/Dillmann/combos.html">Click here for a list of the
                        available combos.</a> This can be expanded<a target="_blank" href="https://github.com/Betamasaheft/Documentation/issues/new?labels=keyboard&amp;assignee=PietroLiuzzo&amp;body=Please%20add%20a%20combo%20in%20the%20input%20keyboard">, do not hesitate to ask (click here to post a new issue).</a>

                <h4>Hold and choose</h4>
                <p>If you hold a key optional values will appear in a list. You can click on the
                    desired value or use arrows and enter to select it. The options are the same as
                    those activated by combinations.</p>
                <p>With this method you do not have to remember or lookup combos, but it does take
                    many more clicks...</p>

                <h4>Advanced options</h4>
                <p>Click on the plus button <i class="fa fa-plus" aria-hidden="true"/> to get more
                    filters.</p>
                <p>You do not have to use all the parameters, set only those you are
                    interested in. You can also search for entries which don't contain a certain
                    information, using the corresponding switch . If this option is active you will
                    be selecting the ones you want to exclude instead of those you want to have.
                    Some examples:</p>
                <ul>
                    <li>Selecting <em>masculinus</em> will return you all the lemmas which do
                        contain that. Selecting <em>femininus</em> and checking not will return you
                        all the lemmas which do not have that (so also verbs, for examples, adverbs,
                        etc.). If you want all the terms which do not contain text in Greek switch
                        not and tick Greek. </li>
                    <li>If you want all the entries which contain text in Syriac or in Coptic tick
                        Syriac and Coptic, which does not mean that you will not get entries which
                        have the other values as well as the ones you picked.</li>
                </ul>

                <h4>Modes</h4>
                <p>If you are searching a string, you might want to try one of the search modes.
                    Default method does not use any of those but uses the orthographic variants,
                    whereas if you do choose a mode, the variants will not be taken into
                    consideration and you will search only what you typed.</p>
                <h4>Search only in citations</h4>
                <p>Ticking this option will search only into <pre>ref</pre> elements in the TEI,
                    i.e. you are searching for citations of let's say Exodus. You tick this and
                    search "Ex." and you will get all places where this citation has been correctly
                    marked. There might be more because most of them have been tagged automatically
                    and there are known cases of mismatch or not matched.</p>

                <p>Use this to select the number of the column in the Dillmann Lexicon you wish to
                    navigate to. It does not make a lot of sense to use this if you are searching a
                    string.</p>
                <p>The search will simply bring you to the lemma which contains the column break you
                    asked for.</p>
                <p>At the top of the lemma you will always have a link to the PDF on Ran HaCohen's
                    website if you still wish to check on the source.</p>

                <h4>Home page search results</h4>
                <p>You might use this as a one page website. Results are shown directly below the
                    search. Then you can click the lemma name and see it in full in the left

                <p>If you are logged in and have enough rights to do so, you will see the update
                    buttons by each entry in the results list and under the main lemma in the middle

                <p>Before you actually remove anything you will be asked to confirm. Editors will be
                    notified and there will be backups anyway.</p>

                <p>Provided we have a record for a cited text in Beta Maṣāḥǝft; and provided we have
                    a text for it, which is quite rare, except for the text generously shared with
                    us from Ran HaCohen; and provided that the citation is correct and canonical,
                    you will see a small icon like this <i class="fa fa-file-text-o" aria-hidden="true"/> beside the citation. Double clicking on it will popup a
                    link to the full text on Beta Maṣāḥǝft, and if available the exact passage
                    cited.</p>
                <p>It is likely that if the passage in question uses the lemma and exactly that you
                    will also see it in the attestations. This function however is only dependent on
                    the citation, so if the structure of the text is correct it will give you the
                    cited text regardless of its content.</p>
                <p>This means, that the more texts we have, the better. If you would like to
                    contribute any text transcription or manuscript transcription you have, we would

                <p>Every time you visualize a lemma we will run a search for the main lemma entry
                    (and only that) in the Beta Maṣāḥǝft corpus, including all records, i.e. also
                    manuscript transcriptions, additions, etc.</p>
                <p>You will see the Keyword in Context result and a link to the Beta Maṣāḥǝft
                    record. If you have rights to access Beta Maṣāḥǝft, then you can go to that page
                    and the text where the word occurs will be highlighted.</p>

        <h3 id="edit">Edit</h3>

                <p>If you want to edit a term, you will click on the Update button on the main page,
                    in the result view or in the lemma view.</p>
                <p>There are very few cases in which you might need to correct the mark up in the Dillmann text. We strongly discourage any modification to the Dillmann as it is. Please, add a new meaning to update the information provided using proper references.</p>
                <p>In most cases you will need to add a new meaning and insert there the information.</p>
                <p>This will convert the xml into a temporary text and stick it into a very basic
                    HTML textarea for you to edit.</p>
                <p>Please note that the guidelines are on the same page, just below the form. You
                    need to read those before you edit anything.</p>
                <p>You have helper buttons which will enter the correct syntax for you.</p>
                <p>Before you save, there will be a validation step. If it does not go through, you
                    will be given instructions and an error report which should hopefully help.</p>

                <p>The guidelines for editing the terms give you for each available notation, an
                    example and its actual correspondent.</p>
                <p>Please, take some time to familiarize yourself with these guidelines. You can
                    also train yourself to this very simple text only notation by looking at some
                    examples. Just hit the edit button on an example, see how it is and then leave
                    the page without committing anything.</p>
                <p>Once you save the text will be converted again to XML parsing the string, and the
                    result will be validated before saving the backup copy and the new file.</p>

        <h4>Editing an existing term</h4>

                <p>Once you have modified your lemma, you need always to enter a clear and
                    explanatory message to detail what you have done. Do not take as examples the
                    messages left before, they are often imprecise and to short. This message will
                    appear under revisions.</p>

                <p>We could have done better, actually, entering each translation in its own

                <p>You can encode the entry as deeply as you would like to as long as it is

                <p>The bibliographic reference is then given, following the guidelines with the
                    notation [p,1]bm:daMag1953 where the information in square brackets is the page
                    number and the string starting with bm: is the unique tag assigned to this
                    bibliographic record in the <a href="https://www.zotero.org/groups/358366/ethiostudies/items/" target="_blank">Ethio Studies Group Library in Zotero</a>. </p>

                <p>Every time you see a confirmation message the main editors of the Lexicon will
                    receive an email which looks like this. This allows a minimal level of control
                    on the edits.</p>

                <p>You could simply paste some text inside your <pre>&lt;Sen&lt; some text as you want  &gt;S&gt;</pre>, but it is much more useful if it is a bit marked up.
                </p>
                <p>Here is a further example with a brief term added.</p>
                <p>Aas you can see in the image we have added here two meanings.</p>
                <p>To make the first we have clicked on NEW ENTRY button. We entered the lemma and changed the source to TraCES.</p>
                <p>We then changed <pre>&lt;Sen&lt;</pre> which was present by default
                    to <pre>&lt;Sde&lt;</pre>. and then we have added the translation and the graphic variant <pre>
                    &lt;Sde&lt;graphische Variante \*gez*ተውንያ፡\* &gt;de&gt;Tunica&gt; {ND} &gt;S&gt;</pre>

                <p>The <pre>{ND}</pre> is a short notation for 'Not in Dillmann'. It should definitely stay there for any newly created entry. It is there by default, just be careful not to delete it.</p>
                <p>You then need to save the entry before you add a new meaning. In this case we wanted to add also an English meaning. </p>
                <p>On our new entry we clicked on update and then on Add new meaning, then we entered 'en'. The new text area appears with the <pre>&lt;Sen&lt; &gt;S&gt;</pre> already there, adn you can add more information. </p>

        <h4>Adding "root" information</h4>

                <p>In the encoding process one important information from the Lexicon was lost,
                    namely the tick lines which group words under the same root. There is a plan to
                    include this information automatically, but until this happens, you can mark a
                    term as being the first in a group by clicking on update and then simply ticking
                    the box beside the lemma.</p>

                        lemma view, where you will see the changes you have made.</p>
                    <p>You cannot revert a change, but you can edit again and delete what you have
                        done.</p>
                    <p>If you want to remove an entire meaning there is a button to do so, but you
                        can also just carefully delete from the text.</p>
                    <p>Please do not leave empty meanings.</p>

        <h3 id="new">Creating a new lemma</h3>

            <p>Are you really sure this is a new lemma? Please search thoroughly and be prepared to
                support your statement with proper evidence.</p>
            <p>Click on the NEW ENTRY button from the home page, then add the lemma. The rest is
                exactely like editing an existing term. We expect this function to be used very
                sparingly.</p>
