Feature request: Tool to fix the Origin of a Body.

@DeepSOIC, do you have any tools to fix Bodies with broken Origins? Something to recreate the Origin, or to transfer everything to a new body?

I haven't tried it, but Morph Container into a Module then back into Body might do it. But i'm worried that something else might break in the process. I guess it could be a new tool.

What is exactly the way your origin is broken, btw? I don't think i've seen that happen in my projects almost ever...

My case is this:

I used the Copy Object to duplicate a Body as it is, keeping it parametric so I could have a different Body to experiment with changing things.

But I unchecked the option to “Select all dependencies”, because I didn’t want to duplicate anything external to the Body, such as VarSets, BaseFeature, or any other objects.

After that, I manually selected the Body and its nested objects, including the Origin, but I forgot to select the nested Origin elements (planes and axes).

Everything looked fine until I deleted this copied Body. When I did that, FreeCAD also deleted the planes and axes of my original Origin since they were in use in 2 locations at the same time (this can only be a bug).

There is this option to Move Object to another Body, but this never works for me. It alwasy say that Some of the selected features have dependencies in the source body.

I see. I'll bear that in mind if i try and make such a tool. In the meantime, try Part-o-magic's Duplicate tool, it was literally made for that. Just select a body and pom-duplicate it, it is supposed to do exactly what you were after (duplicate all content but keep references to external things).

A simple solution from the FreeCAD team would be to add a checkbox in Copy Object to avoid selecting external objects during the copy operation.

However, it feels like it’s getting harder and harder to get these kinds of improvements implemented.

By recreating the origin and then updating all objects that reference it.
Or perhaps by creating a new body, moving or duplicating the objects, and then updating the references to the new origin.

Anything would help.

The problem here, I think, is that the Origin and its sub-elements don’t share the same name index. Because of that, the tool would have to guess the object names to update the references.

In practice, even the user might not be able to identify or specify those names reliably.
