Require likeness scan for “Scan ID” method?

Is it possible to add an option to require a subsequent selfie and check for likeness if a user opts for ID scan in the first place?

I was able to use sample ID documents on Wikipedia to pass age verification.

As I understand the selfie function can be supplemented with ID scan which includes likeness comparison if selfie appears too young. Was hoping the scan id function can require a selfie for likeness too.

Yes you are right, there is a option to force the user to do a scan id verification right after the selfie check if the user was detected as underage. You can enable it easy, by changing a line here: https://github.com/Godotcam/goCamOpenSource/blob/main/source/frontend/js/app/avs.js/ui/library/tabs/verificationTypeTabs.ts#L58 from VERIFICATION_TYPE_SELFIE_AND_SCAN_ID_OPTIONAL to VERIFICATION_TYPE_SELFIE_AND_SCAN_ID_FORCED.

Since you have this workflow already at your disposal, we recommend you to use it if you require extra likeness check. The user will have to go through both verifications either way, so it does not really matter the order in which he makes them in our opinion.

You can go one step further and hide the scan id option entirely, that way it will be used only as a complement to the selfie one. It can be done from here: https://github.com/Godotcam/goCamOpenSource/blob/main/example/php/redirect/index.php#L69

Hi. Thank you for the suggestion. Since scan ID is a rather intrusive, I would prefer to allow a self only option. This is my desired flow:

User chooses selfie:
Selfie detects adult -> pass, no further verification required
Selfie detects minor -> require ID scan with likeness comparison

User chooses scan ID:
Scan ID detects minor -> fail
Scan ID detects adult -> require selfie likeness scan

For now I have disabled ID scan as you have suggested.

Btw are there any future plans to make the scan ID option more robust? It appears the code only looks for the DOB at a position relative to the photo. It doesn’t detect authenticity.

Glad we could help!

The scan id verification can be done with our without a webcam access, so in case of no webcam access the selfie step as you suggest it will not work as expected. Anyway, in case of failure, the user can restart the process and choose a different option each time.

We will think about your suggestion but we need to make sure the UX makes sense and the user will not endup in some error page without a explanation.

We are still actively developing go.cam, both open source and the hosted versions (which is also free) and we are looking into make the scan id more robust. It is a challenging task due to the fact that we run everything on device and also because the image you take with a webcam might capture or not any security features of a document. It is very dependent on the image quality and lightning.

For now pairing it with the selfie is the best option.
