Installation of BRouter offline crashes

Describe the bug

When I try to install BRouter offline, QMS crashes at the point when I click "Weiter" on the screen "BRouter Einrichtung". Directly before that the latest version (1.7.7) of BRouter was downloaded and installed.

What have you done to circle down the problem?

I could not find that problem mentioned anywhere.

To Reproduce

1. In QMS in the window "Streckenführung" select "BRouter (online)"
2. Click on "Einrichten"
3. In the window "BRouter Einrichtung" select "lokale Installation"
4. Click "Weiter"
5. Select the subdirectory ".../qmapshack/BRouter
6. Click on "neue BRouter-Installation erzeugen"
7. Select e.g. version 1.7.7
8. Click "Herunterladen und Installieren"
9. Once download and installation is finished, click "Weiter"
10. A window shows up briefly (<1 sec), and disappears. After that QMS crashes and all windows disappear without any notice

Expected behavior

Program should continue with installation and setup

• OS: I tried it on two machines, one with Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS, the other with 22.04 LTS. Both show the same behaviour.
• QMapShack Version: 1.17.1
• Window Manager: GNOME, Wayland

I tried BRouter 1.7.7, also the two older versions of BRouter, with no difference.

I can't reproduce on KDE/X11. Maybe wayland related?

The missing (crashing) window is the window to select routing data tiles.

I can't reproduce on GNOME/XWAYLAND. Not wayland related!

Environment:

• Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS (update level 2025-05-29)
• apt list gnome-software -> gnome-software/noble,now 46.0-1ubuntu2 amd64

I can (and have already) reproduce the issue. Is there anything I do help? Debug log files...?
Please let know what parameters to use to start debugging. I could not see anything in the normal log file.

A back trace would be helpful. But for that you need to compile QMS with debug information and I am quite certain that the problem is gone by then. For me it looks like a library version mismatch.

Nothing will change unless:

Someone else can reproduce it. Hopefully with a back trace.

Or you can provide a back trace.

Up to that point I assume the problem is caused by mismatching library versions.

How did you install QMS? From Ubuntu's repo using command apt install qmapshack? Did you? I do not believe.
Regarding your log file and seeing file names like /tmp/.mount_QMapShBvllJM/usr/translations/qt_de.qm,
/tmp/.mount_QMapShBvllJM/usr/share/qmapshack/translations/qmapshack_de.qm etc. , it does not seem so.
apt usually installs Qt5 translation files into folder /usr/share/qt5/translations
and QMS translation files into folder /usr/share/qmapshack/translations.

If not, I propose first of all trying a regular apt installation, because at least Ubuntu 24.04.x has QMS version 1.17.1 in it's repo
and it is ensured that dependent libraries do match installed QMS executable.

Did you ever try to run qmapshack with a "clean" configuration using
command line /usr/bin/qmapshack -c qms.ini, where file qms.ini is either empty or did not exist before?
And before configuring anything else within QMS trying to install BRouter?

I suppose, you did install QMapShack-x86_64_Ubuntu-22.04.AppImage.
Running ./QMapShack-x86_64_Ubuntu-22.04.AppImage on Ubuntu 24.04.2 behaves exactly as described above.
Executable crashes after "Weiter" with error messages:

No crash however with newer QMapShack-x86_64_Ubuntu-22.04.AppImage on Ubuntu 22.04.2.

As mentioned before, I recommend QMS provided by Ubuntu's repo.

@JFritzle : Yes, I took the version from github. I will remove my installtion and do a fresh install via apt.

BTW: I was looking for the "Speicherabzug" as you also showed in your last message, but could not find that. It should be in the subdir ../qmapshack, which does not exist. I was hoping to find more insight there.

I also found an entry in kernel.log, from the time when the crash happened:

I managed to remove my old installation and install 1.16.1, which appears to be the latest for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. BRouter was installing version 1.6.3 as the latest version. I had to manually move the brouter files to the correct subdirectory and rename the app to brouter.jar, but got it working.

I will try it also on the other machine.

But to be honest I never did a test with the BRouter stuff because personally I am working with Routino only.

As said before, QMapShack-x86_64_Ubuntu-22.04.AppImage i.e.

does not crash on Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS. BRouter 1.7.7 is installing and working perfectly.

While development level of Ubuntu 24.04 repo's QMS version 1.17.1 is dated 12-Dec-2023, appimage is slightly more recent and dated 05-June-2024.

I think the main issue here is that QMS crashes instead of catching the error and showing a message.

If there is an ABI mismatch causing a segfault there is no chance to catch it and report something.
