Missing Project Homepage for Users

I found this project a couple of weeks ago and I think it is super useful. Took me a while to find it

Unfortunately I took me a while to find this project and get used to it.

A landigpage / website, that is beautiful and describes the first steps, so google can find it and startes have a better start

Describe alternatives you've considered

Give a reason why someone else should spend time on that request

You are welcome to promote QMapShack in any way. Create a web page and push it up in the algorithm of Google.

Right now Google gives me the GitHub release page as 1st link. This is, from my point of view, perfect. And the wiki leads you directly to the startup pages.

If you see the wiki not fit for a beginner you are welcome to enhance it. It's open to edit for everyone. As @wthaem has spent a lot of time on the wiki it's always a good habit to synchronize with him.

First, I want to acknowledge the incredible work that has gone into this project – the software itself is fantastic, and the documentation in the wiki is comprehensive and well-organized.

That said, I think there's a distinction worth making between different types of users we're trying to reach:

• The release page is wonderful for existing users who want to stay informed about what's new and track improvements. Also to download the software
• The wiki is invaluable once someone has decided to use the software or is seriously evaluating it – it provides all the depth needed to get started and become proficient.

What I feel is missing is that crucial first impression layer – material designed to catch the attention of potential new users who haven't yet discovered QMapShack. Something that answers questions like: "Why should I choose this tool? What makes it special? What can I accomplish with it?"

Think of it as a welcoming front door that invites people in, shows them the possibilities, and then naturally guides them toward the wiki for the deeper dive.

I genuinely believe this project deserves more visibility, and I'd be happy to contribute to making that happen if there's interest.

Well, with GitHub we are kind of limited when it comes to fancy, welcoming entrance pages. However it provides us with a secure and conformal space. If you know how to coax GitHub into something more welcoming, go ahead.

If it comes to a web page outside of GitHub, things get more complicated. Who creates it? Who maintains it? Who takes care it matches all legal requirements? I am not at all in this business. Neither technical, nor artistic, nor legal.

Therefore all I can suggest: If you want to create and maintain a webpage that promotes QMapShack I am totally fine with that. If there is a way to move it into place as official landing pod for new users, you will have my support.

Yea, I see.

Maybe we can use GitHub Pages with a customized theme. In this way the page generation can be simply done by using GitHub Actions with markdown files. That would be the prefered solution. I am not sure how far we can go with it, but I can create a simple test page at the weekend.

Depending on the outcome we have another option. I own a domain and a small webspace. http://qlandkarte.org/ . But if we use that, the page must be rock solid and fulfill all legal requirements of the EU. I am responsible for it as legal person with my private capital. So it's nothing I open up lightly.

Sounds good. Let's do first steps first.

At the weekend I'll:
a. clone the repo
b. add some sample content for the website
c. add a jekyll template
d. build a pipeline to generate the page as an early draft

From that point we can decide what to do next. GH Pages supports custom domains - or things can be published to an external webspace.

Just a quick update. I am still working on it, since I am not super happy with the result. Most likely I will have something useful between christmas and new year
