What does automatic do?

How can I determine how many levels of compression my hardware has available?

What do you mean by "linear"?

I'd like to know what these settings are doing and how they behave exactly so I can make better informed choices rather than trial and error.

What does automatic do?

Basically this option goes straight to ffmpeg and they only explains that it's device dependent. See documentation here.
Auto set the value to -1 which let the hardware use it's default value.

I also see that I should update it because the quality option has been renamed in ffmpeg CLI.

I don't really know more than what the wiki page from ffmpeg says, sorry.

What do you mean by "linear"?

The bitrate target you set is the value for 30fps video but is scaled up or down depending on the effective framerate of the video.
For instance a 1080p10 video will have a lower bitrate than the value you set and a 1080p60 will have a higher one.
