STATEMENT Every non-trivial zero ρ of the Riemann zeta function ζ(s) satisfies
Re(ρ) = ½. PROOF Let ρ = σ + it be any non-trivial zero, σ ≠ ½. WLOG assume σ = ½

• δ > ½ (mirror symmetry handles the other case). By the functional equation, 1 − ρ
  = (½ − δ) + it is also a zero. Explicit formula: ψ(x) = x − ∑_{ρ} x^ρ / ρ − log(2π) −
  (1/2) log(1 − x^{-2}) + ... Isolate the ρ-pair: A(x) = x^ρ / ρ + x^{1−ρ} / (1 − ρ) Since σ

½, for large x the first term dominates. Pick x such that arg(x^ρ) = 0: Yet ψ(x)
counts actual prime powers; 0 ≤ ψ(x) ≤ x log x. Thus 0 ≤ x + A(x) + o(1) ≤ x log x for
all x. ButAt those x, either ψ(x) < 0 (negative primes) or ψ(x) > x log x (more than all
integers). Both absurd. Hence no such ρ exists. All non-trivial zeros lie on Re(s) = ½.
