path autocomplete with bash commands

sorry for the basic question, I am new to atom. 

I am able to invoke path autocomplete box with `ctrl+space`, however if type a bash function before it doesnt work. i.e. 
```
ls ./  +  <ctrl + space>
```

doesnt invoke the autocomplete path box... 

Are there additional keystrokes or perhaps package that enable this?
