should we use use africastalking gem?

I realised the manual africastalking file has some non-standard ruby ways of code. Should we adjust it and use our 'better' version or should we assume its okay and use the gem. I am making an assumption that the gem is the same file downloadable from their website (though this can be confirmed later)
