Building with gfortran 7.4.0 generates internal compiler error

Isn’t 7.4 old? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Fortran 9.2 is the current stable

Yes, while you are correct, I'm using the default which is provided by the Ubuntu 18.04 apt system, ...

dg6@fusiont6-1:~/code/genray$ sudo apt install gfortran

gfortran is already the newest version (4:7.4.0-1ubuntu2.3).

I am also going to try a newer version, but I expect the problem is associated with already using a too new version.

@ypetrov which version do you use?

Actually, using 9.2 it does indeed build. Although that does not really help me.
