Tally app recognizes Pi in devices tab but shows disconnected

The node app.js is running on the pi (Pi 3 model B) and the tally desktop application recognizes it on the network in the devices tab, however it will only ever show the red "disconnected" label. Also on the pi, both program and preview lights are illuminated while the app is running. Making changes on the ATEM switcher does not have any impact. The app status and web views on phone work fine.
might something be blocking the messaging between app and pi?
