_obj as part of public API is ugly and un-Pythonic

1. Leading `_` indicates honor-system private member
2. It's annoying typing and seeing it

I'm not sure what a more elegant solution is.  Maybe a defunvert function (callable as a method for the last time in the chain).  Or unvert?
