Unicode Zero from xml

I have found sometimes that certain xml files start with this group of characters "\xE2\x80\x8C", throwing an exception.

I have been using this to solve the problem:
preg_replace('/[\x{200B}-\x{200D}\x{FEFF}]/u', '', $string);
