caching strategy

Currently we're pulling down and storing the whole git repo. We should consider only pulling down the contents of the packs/ dir of the repository to save some bits.

I don't think git will allow us to pull down a subdirectory of the repository, will it?

This would definitely be an improvement over the existing solution.
