Ok, while I dig into this, you can force the -efi by using this (for that X, replace it with whatever your current file system is squashfs or ext4):

owut check --device armsr/armv8:generic:X:force

I've spent a bunch of time trying to figure out what's going on here, but without your setup, it's impossible to see what the failure is. I suspect (but cannot confirm) that the container has somehow hidden the fact that it's EFI booting (there's no /sys/firmware/efi/ directory), and that's causing the export_bootdevice call to fail.

I really have no idea how to fix or work around this, as it's nothing in owut, but something deep inside sysupgrade for your specific device setup. Are there settings on the lxc manager that allow you to select between BIOS and EFI boot? If so, I'd say you've got it backwards for this container (but this is only a wild guess).
