doesn't deal with accented characters

I don't know if it's within your desired domain of support, but it doesn't deal with german layouts (probably neither other accented characters from other languages) -öä and the like.

@increpare I'd be happy to accept a pull request for adding support for those characters. It would be hard for me to test that since I don't have those keys on my keyboard.
