Record image thumbnails distorted

The problem is that not all images have the same height/width ratio as the thumbnails; in fact, most of them do not. There are a four solutions:

1. Padding on the right or bottom (ugly)
2. Padding on both sides (will be an issue for landscape images with a biggish caption)
3. Cropping
4. Stretching

I think only cropping and stretching are really appropriate here and I expect that which one works best depends on the set of images. I think that for images of herbarium sheets cropping is definitely better, but the stretching of the thumbnails in the examples doesn't bother me.
