Help!?!?
Welcome ideas to beef up the process.
Background: We are in the 3rd year of a Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) Strategic Initiative, of which 'Open Science' plays a strong role. For year 1 our goal was to develop a National PAM Network Lab Manual, which would serve to link PAM Lab manuals from each science center, as well as be a 'home' for other strategic initiative projects, including the Open Science work. To facilitate this work, we had one member from each science center participate in the 2024 Openscapes Cohort and we held biweekly PAM Co-working meetings where we worked on specific activities to develop our respective lab manuals. We also documented these activities in an Open Science manual to use as a reference, and as an example of how to use these tools.
During the 2nd year, most work was derailed due to things beyond our control. Now in our third year (2026), the goal is to encourage continual adoption of open science methods and culture into the NOAA Fisheries PAM teams.
Purpose:
Purpose is to create a self-sustaining PAM Open Science group, consisting of members from each science center; intention is to encourage a culture of open science with NMFS PAM teams without relying on one or a few people.
Outcome:
PAM Open Science Committee (2 participants from each science center), periodic co-working meetings, team up for sprints to tackle projects together.
Process:
- Form a PAM Open Science committee consisting of 2 members from each science center
- Create tools to facilitate adoption of new open science practices/approaches/tools (see OS Tool Searchable Dashboard)
- Create weekly 'Co-Working' meetings, each hosted by a different 'team', on a different day of the week
- [ ] Merge one of those meetings w/ existing 'PAM SI Office Hours'
- [ ] Consider having one of those meetings be 'open to all' (any noaa person)
- [ ] Share NMFS Open Science calendar updates - Co-Work in Sprints
- [ ] Identify sprints, team up for help
- [ ] Maybe consider a project board such as this one ('how we work') for PAM teams? - Presentation to larger PAM-SI teams on Open Science (to get this all started):
- [ ] Background info, what we did, etc
- [ ] Short 2min per team to show & tell
- [ ] What is next (co-working, work in sprints, fall Openscapes, etc) - Openscapes co-hort for 2026?? Mentors??
