e.g. an RPM gauge resetting from a high value to 0 seems to wrap thru the undefined range rather than the (larger angle?) from high back down to 0.
if a gauge isn't cyclic then it shouldn't be allowed to transform thru the discontinuity. maybe that means transforming in the gauge domain rather than its range? maybe clamp already does this; if not it should.
