[play.file~] cannot load some (known good) web streams

I'm using Plugdata 0.9.2 (which includes ELSE 1.0 RC13) on MacOS 15.7.2 (Apple silicon).

I'm trying to load web radio (icecast) URLS using the "stream" message to [play.file~] but it often fails with this error:
[play.file~]: open: Failed to open input stream

The example stream https://radio.plaza.one/ogg in the help file works fine, but many others fail. I checked my streams in a browser and all play fine. I tried a mix of http, https, different codecs, etc. I don't see a correlation. Maybe there are certain headers that cause a problem? I thought maybe it was a sample rate mismatch, but I tried different sample rates too.
