Slows down when logs become large

Tried running over night with several messages sent with 4 sec intervals. In the morning (9 hours runtime) it was only forwarding one message per second or so, backing up the buffers and breaking the back-and-forth communication between the devices. 

As far as I can see, this is caused by the way messages are logged, as I have tried doing the same with the logging commented out.
