I may be mistaken, but it looks as though there's an additional check for the kernel version in source/svchax/svchax.c:svchax_init(void)

Wouldn't that also need to be updated to always use memchunkhax2?

Negative. They both use memchunkhax 1 or 2, but the condition to use it with gspwn is checked in SafeSys itself. svchax always uses gspwn.
