Potential RCR Training Topics to Cover

The topics below are derived from the CITI RCR mentoring module. Mentoring affects students' feelings of belonging in a program. We must showcase the impact that advisor/mentee relationships have on the research process. The mentor is meant to act as a coach/sponsor in the developing career of their mentee.

Conflict Scenarios

  • Power imbalances between advisors and mentees
  • Conflicts between a student's personal work style and the work expectations of their lab.
  • A mentee who feels their advisor is not approachable (hard to talk to).
  • Unclear communication.
  • An advisor who shows interest in the success of other students than their own.
  • An advisor who places administrative and work-related roadblocks to prevent students from graduating.
  • An advisor who is more interested in cutting-edge research and brings in more money for their lab/department.
  • A Mentee who feels their work is not special
  • An advisor who is more interested in protecting the "prestige" of their reputation than cultivating research skills in mentees
