This repository contains my submission for the Kaggle Agents Intensive Capstone Project. PawConnect AI is a multi-agent system designed to revolutionize pet foster and adoption by intelligently matching pets with potential caregivers through conversational AI, computer vision, and personalized recommendations.
Built with Google AI Development Kit (ADK) and Google Cloud services, this agent demonstrates practical application of orchestrated AI agents solving real-world coordination problems in animal welfare.
Pet adoption and fostering traditionally involves significant friction for all parties:
-
For Adopters/Fosters: Finding compatible pets requires visiting multiple websites, calling shelters, and manually filtering through hundreds of listings. Users often lack guidance on breed characteristics, care requirements, and suitability for their lifestyle.
-
For Shelters: Managing inquiries, scheduling meet-and-greets, and processing applications consumes valuable staff time that could be spent on animal care. Critical cases (elderly pets, medical needs) often get overlooked in crowded listings.
-
For Pets: Mismatched pet & owners lead to the pet being returned to the shelters, causing emotional trauma and reducing adoption success rates for the pets in need. Pets with special needs struggle to find appropriate homes without targeted outreach.
These challenges result in longer shelter stays, higher operational costs, compassion fatigue among staff, and preventable euthanasia in overcrowded facilities.
PawConnect AI addresses these challenges through an intelligent multi-agent system that:
-
Personalizes Discovery: Uses machine learning to match pets with users based on lifestyle compatibility, personality profiles, and historical preferences, not just basic filters in common pet adoption websites.
-
Streamlines Communication: Provides 24/7 conversational assistance through Dialogflow CX, answering questions about breeds, care requirements, adoption processes, and scheduling of follow up meetings & conversations with shelter staff. MCP-powered email and calendar integration automatically sends visit confirmations, application status updates, and coordinates foster-adopter connections.
-
Enhances Decision-Making: Leverages Google Cloud Vision API to analyze pet photos for breed identification, age estimation, and behavioral cues, providing deeper insights beyond text descriptions.
-
Automates Workflows: Handles application processing, background checks, home suitability assessments, and visit scheduling, freeing shelter staff to focus on animal welfare.
-
Prioritizes Urgency: Surfaces time-sensitive cases through intelligent recommendations, increasing placement rates for at-risk animals.
This automation transforms pet adoption from a time-consuming manual search into a guided, data-driven experience, enabling better matches and faster placements while reducing administrative burden on shelters.
PawConnect AI is built around a central orchestrator, the pawconnect_main_agent, which coordinates an ecosystem of five specialized sub-agents using event-driven communication via Google Cloud Pub/Sub.

PawConnect AI follows a ten-step intelligent matching process:
-
User Onboarding: Conversation Agent collects user preferences (pet type, size, age, temperament), lifestyle factors (home type, work schedule, other pets, experience level), and location via conversational interview.
-
Preference Analysis: Recommendation Agent analyzes user responses to create a compatibility profile, identifying key constraints (e.g., "no shedding," "good with kids") and nice-to-haves.
-
Pet Discovery: Search Agent queries integrated shelter APIs within specified radius, retrieving all available pets matching basic criteria (species, location).
-
Image Enhancement: Vision Agent analyzes pet photos to enrich listings with breed identification, age estimation, and visual health indicators, supplementing incomplete shelter data.
-
Intelligent Ranking: Recommendation Agent scores each pet using ML model, weighing lifestyle compatibility, personality match, practical constraints, and urgency factors (time in shelter, medical needs).
-
Interactive Presentation: Conversation Agent presents top 5-10 matches with explanations ("Max is a great match because he's low-energy, good with cats, and doesn't require a yard"), allowing users to ask questions or request alternatives.
-
Visual Exploration: Users can upload their own pet photos (existing pets at home) for Vision Agent to analyze compatibility (e.g., size matching, energy levels).
-
Visit Scheduling: When user expresses interest, Workflow Agent coordinates meet-and-greet scheduling via MCP-powered email and calendar integration. System automatically:
- Creates calendar event on shelter's calendar with visit details
- Sends HTML confirmation email to adopter with shelter address and what to bring
- Adds calendar invite to adopter's calendar with automatic reminders
- Handles rescheduling requests and cancellations bidirectionally
-
Application Processing: After successful visit, Workflow Agent guides user through digital application, handling validation, background checks, and home assessment scheduling asynchronously.
-
Outcome Tracking: System records adoption/foster outcomes to retrain Recommendation Agent model, improving future matching accuracy based on successful placements.
Each step builds upon the previous, creating a seamless journey from first interaction to successful placement while gathering data to continuously improve matching intelligence.

PawConnect AI demonstrates the power of multi-agent orchestration for complex real-world coordination problems. By dividing responsibilities among specialized sub-agents—each focused on a distinct capability (search, recommendation, conversation, vision, workflow)—the system achieves both technical elegance and practical impact.
This architecture enables:
- Modularity: Each agent can be independently developed, tested, and optimized without affecting others.
- Scalability: Agents communicate via Pub/Sub, allowing horizontal scaling of compute-intensive operations (Vision API calls, ML predictions).
- Maintainability: Clear separation of concerns makes debugging and feature additions straightforward.
- Extensibility: New agents (e.g., veterinary recommendation, pet training resources) can be added to the ecosystem seamlessly.
- Resilience: Agent failures are isolated; the orchestrator handles retries and graceful degradation.
The event-driven design, inspired by agent-shutton's orchestration pattern, allows PawConnect AI to handle concurrent user requests efficiently while maintaining conversation context and coordinating asynchronous workflows like background checks and scheduling.
In practice, PawConnect AI has the potential to:
- Reduce adoption search time by 60-70%: Users find compatible pets in minutes rather than days of manual searching.
- Increase successful placements by 25-30%: Better matching reduces return rates and improves long-term adoption success.
- Free 10-15 hours per week of shelter staff time: Automated application processing and inquiry handling allow focus on animal care.
- Surface 40% more adoptions for urgent cases: Intelligent prioritization ensures at-risk animals get visibility.
Scenario: A user in Seattle wants to adopt a medium-sized dog that's good with cats and children, suitable for apartment living, and low-maintenance (first-time owner).
Traditional Process:
- Visit 5+ shelter websites individually
- Filter manually through 100+ listings
- Call shelters during business hours with questions
- Schedule visits via phone tag
- Fill out paper applications
- Time to first visit: 3-5 days
With PawConnect AI:
- Single conversation with Conversation Agent (5 minutes)
- Vision Agent analyzes user's current cat photos to assess dog compatibility
- Recommendation Agent surfaces 3 ideal matches with detailed explanations
- Schedule visit via chat interface
- Digital application pre-filled with conversation data
- Time to first visit: 2-4 hours

- Multi-Provider Email Support: Gmail, Outlook/Microsoft 365, and SendGrid integration with OAuth 2.0
- Multi-Provider Calendar Support: Google Calendar and Outlook Calendar integration
- Automated Confirmations: HTML email confirmations sent automatically with shelter details, what to bring, and visit information
- Calendar Events: Automatic calendar invites with shelter location, attendees, and reminders (24hr and 1hr before)
- Fallback Mechanisms: Automatic fallback to SendGrid if primary email provider fails
- Graceful Degradation: System continues operation even if email/calendar services are temporarily unavailable
- Comprehensive Testing: 23+ unit and integration tests validating all functionality

Forever in Our Hearts
This project is dedicated to the memory of Sadie Grace, a beautiful soul who showed us the unconditional love and joy that pets bring to our lives. Her gentle spirit and wagging tail reminded us every day why the work of connecting pets with loving homes matters so deeply.
Sadie Grace embodied everything this project stands for—the transformative power of the human-animal bond and the importance of ensuring every pet finds their forever home. Though she has crossed the rainbow bridge, her legacy lives on in every successful adoption this system helps facilitate.
Rest easy, sweet girl. You were the goodest girl.
