Universal Game Tester 🔧

The Universal Game Tester (located in UniversalGameTester/) is a comprehensive testing and analysis tool that works with ANY Keymaster's Keep game implementation. It automatically discovers, loads, and tests game modules regardless of their structure, option types, or complexity.

Technical Details

The tester handles:

  • Custom Option Classes: Automatically resolves string type annotations to actual classes
  • Dynamic Mocking: Creates universal mock environment for all possible imports
  • Robust Error Handling: Gracefully handles import failures, missing attributes, and malformed data
  • Weight-Based Selection: Implements the same probabilistic selection system used by the Keep
  • Cross-Platform Compatibility: Works on Windows, Mac, and Linux

This tool is essential for validating that game implementations will work correctly within the Keymaster's Keep ecosystem before deployment.


Playnite Library Integration

The Playnite Library module allows you to generate objectives based on your personal Playnite games database. This implementation supports filtering, sorting, and challenge generation using all the metadata Playnite provides (tags, genres, features, platforms, categories, sources, series, scores, and more).

How to Use

  1. Export your Playnite games database using the Json Library Import Export add-on.
    • In Playnite, install the add-on and export your library to a JSON file (e.g., games.json).
    • Place the exported file somewhere accessible (e.g., your OneDrive or local folder).
  2. Configure the file location in your Keymaster's Keep options YAML:
    • In your KMK options YAML, set the playnite_library_json_path to the path of your exported JSON file.
    • Example:
      playnite_library_json_path: C:/Users/yourname/Documents/games.json
  3. Run Keymaster's Keep and select Playnite Library objectives as desired. The module will automatically read your exported file and generate objectives using your real game collection.

Requirements


Include Option Standards

All game implementations follow a standardized approach for include Toggle options:

  • Basic Content: All fundamental include options default to True for better objective generation
  • Specialized/Harder Content: Options for speedruns, difficulty challenges, or specialized content default to False
  • Cursed/Tedious Modules: Games like "Cursed Red Dead Redemption 2" and "Really Boring Challenges" have all options default to True, as players are deliberately opting into that content type

This ensures that casual players get comprehensive objective generation by default, while preserving the option to disable challenging or specialized content categories.


Game Implementation Modules

Adventure/Experience Challenges

A meta-game in which the options generated will be local exploration, cultural experiences, outdoor activities, and culinary adventures from the player's adventure backlog, paired with appropriate actions. Some default options are provided for clarity, but can easily be overwritten with whatever the player desires.

This features separate objective templates for different types of adventure activities, with actions tailored to each category:

Local Exploration: "VISIT Downtown District" or "PHOTOGRAPH Historic Neighborhood" Cultural Experiences: "ATTEND Live Theater Show" or "PARTICIPATE IN Cultural Workshop" Outdoor Activities: "ATTEMPT Rock Climbing" or "CONQUER Hiking Trail" Culinary Adventures: "TRY International Restaurant" or "SAMPLE Wine Tasting"

Archipelocal

A real-world exploration module that generates location-based objectives using the Geoapify Places API. Visit cafes, parks, museums, and other nearby places based on your actual location! Supports both concrete place suggestions (with coordinates and distances) and generic category-based objectives.

Archipelagourmet

A meta-game in which the options generarated will be recipes, and/or takeaway and restaurant options provided by the player. Some default options are provided for clarity, but can easily be overwritten with whatever the player desires.

This also features a submodule that include challenges of the type: "Make a meal using each of the following ingredients: {3-5 random ingredients}"

This includes options for filtering by dietary requirements, as well as blocking unwanted ingredients and adding custom ingredients. You can also set the range for the number of random ingredients from 1 through 10, though there is a chance too high a number will cause the challenge to be unreadable in the client!

Chapter Quest

A meta-game that transforms your personal reading list into gaming objectives, creating targeted reading challenges based on your book collection with chapter-specific goals and meta-challenges.

This features comprehensive objective templates for different types of reading goals:

Individual Chapters: "[Fantasy Fiction] The Hobbit by J.R.R. Chart Attack

A meta-game that lets you follow charts (music, books, films, games, restaurants, etc.) and generates objectives that pick a specific chart and a chart position.

This features a flexible system for defining charts and how you want to interact with them:

Configuration: "Billboard Hot 100 | Follow | 1-50 | 3" or "Goodreads Fantasy | Read | 1-100"

Sample Objectives: "Follow Billboard Hot 100 #7" or "Read Goodreads Fantasy #42"

Features:

  • Custom Charts: Define any ranked list you want to follow
  • Custom Verbs: Set the action for each chart (Follow, Watch, Read, Play, Visit)
  • Position Ranges: Focus on the top 10, top 50, or any specific range
  • Weighted Selection: Optional "Weight Top Positions" feature makes higher-ranked items (e.g., #1) more likely to appear than lower-ranked ones

Christmas/Holiday Challenges

A meta-game in which the options generated will be holiday decorations, gift preparations, baking projects, and festive traditions from the player's Christmas and holiday backlog, paired with appropriate seasonal actions. Some default options are provided for clarity, but can easily be overwritten with whatever the player desires.

This includes comprehensive customization with a two-tier weighting system:

  • Category Weight: Controls how often objectives from each category appear overall (0-100+)
  • Task Weight: Controls how often specific tasks appear when their category is selected (0-100+)
  • Task Properties: Mark tasks as "difficult" or "time_consuming" for proper filtering
  • Flexible Format: Use simple strings for basic tasks or detailed format for full control

The module comes with 8 default categories covering common life areas (Fitness, Home, Creative, Learning, Personal Development, Social, Career, Financial), each with 8-9 example tasks. Players can completely customize categories and tasks to match their personal goals and priorities. Perfect for anyone who wants to gamify their to-do lists, habit tracking, or personal development goals with fine-tuned control over objective frequency!

Keymaster's Keep

The ultimate meta module for generating challenges to play Keymaster's Keep itself! This module creates objectives for playing Keymaster's Keep in its two game modes: Keymaster's Challenge and Magic Key Heist, using the comprehensive game selection pool from the actual Keymaster's Keep configuration.

This features objective templates that mirror the two main game modes, with games selected from the real Keymaster's Keep pool:

Keymaster's Challenge: "Complete a Keymaster's Challenge including the games: Celeste, Hollow Knight, and Slay the Spire" Magic Key Heist: "Complete a Magic Key Heist including the games: Balatro and Enter the Gungeon"

This includes options for customizing the game selection pool, challenge types, and game count ranges. Players can:

  • Edit Game Selection: Add, remove, or weight games in the selection pool (defaults to the 120+ games currently available)
  • Choose Challenge Types: Select which game modes to include (Keymaster's Challenge, Magic Key Heist, or both)
  • Set Game Count Range: Configure minimum (1-10) and maximum (1-10) games per challenge (defaults to 2-6)

This creates a truly recursive meta-gaming experience where Keymaster's Keep challenges you to play the very games that Keymaster's Keep was designed to manage! Just like with other modules, players can completely customize their experience by editing the game selection to match their preferences and library.

Music Listening

A meta-game in which the options generated will be albums, artists, and playlists from the player's music listening backlog, paired with appropriate listening actions. Some default options are provided for clarity, but can easily be overwritten with whatever the player desires.

This features separate objective templates for different types of musical content, with actions tailored to each category:

Albums: "LISTEN TO Album Title" or "ANALYZE Soundtrack Title" Artists: "EXPLORE Artist Name" or "STUDY DISCOGRAPHY Composer Name" Playlists: "COMPLETE Playlist Name" or "SHUFFLE THROUGH Mix Name"

This includes options for customizing album selections, artist selections, playlist selections, and their respective action lists. Physical/Health Challenges

A meta-game in which the options generated will be exercises, wellness activities, nutrition goals, and movement challenges from the player's health and fitness backlog, paired with appropriate actions. Some default options are provided for clarity, but can easily be overwritten with whatever the player desires.

This features separate objective templates for different types of health activities, with actions tailored to each category:

Exercise: "COMPLETE Push-up Challenge" or "PRACTICE Strength Circuit" Wellness: "MAINTAIN Sleep Schedule" or "ESTABLISH Morning Routine" Nutrition: "TRY Healthy Recipe" or "TRACK Water Intake" Movement: "COMPLETE 10,000 Steps" or "PRACTICE Morning Stretch"

Really Boring Challenges

A deliberately mundane module that transforms everyday, routine activities into gaming objectives, celebrating the art of finding engagement in the most ordinary tasks.

Core Categories: Household Maintenance, Personal Organization, Digital Housekeeping, Routine Optimization, Administrative Tasks, Basic Self-Care

Sample Objectives: "Organize 50 digital files" or "Clean one room thoroughly" or "Update 3 different passwords"

Real-World Scavenger Hunt

A comprehensive real-world exploration game that encourages getting outside, discovering your local area, and engaging with your community. This module turns your surroundings into a game world with objectives focused on photography, location discovery, object collection, social interaction, nature exploration, cultural experiences, seasonal activities, and community engagement.

This features 8 major categories of real-world objectives:

A meta-game in which the options generated will be friend meetups, family activities, community events, and networking opportunities from the player's social backlog, paired with appropriate social actions and customizable lists of people to interact with. Some default options are provided for clarity, but can easily be overwritten with whatever the player desires.

This features separate objective templates for different types of social activities, with actions tailored to each category:

Friend Meetups: "ARRANGE Coffee Meetup with Best Friend" or "CATCH UP WITH Game Night with College Friend" Family Activities: "VISIT Family Dinner with Family Member" or "SPEND TIME WITH Holiday Visit with Family Member" Community Events: "ATTEND Local Festival" or "VOLUNTEER FOR Community Meeting" Networking: "NETWORK AT Professional Meetup" or "PARTICIPATE IN Industry Conference"

This includes options for customizing meetup types, family activities, community events, networking opportunities, and their respective action lists. Most importantly, it includes a People Selection option where you can list actual friends, family members, colleagues, and other people you want to connect with. The system will only generate objectives for social categories that have been configured, allowing for flexible use whether you focus on friend connections, family time, community involvement, professional networking, or all four!

Steam Achievements

A meta-game that generates objectives based on your Steam library and achievement progress, automatically fetching your games via the Steam API.

Setup Required:

  1. Get a Steam Web API Key: Visit https://steamcommunity.com/dev/apikey to generate one.
  2. Set the Environment Variable:
    • Windows (System): Search for "Edit the system environment variables", click "Environment Variables", add a new User variable named STEAM_API_KEY with your key as the value. Restart your terminal/editor.
    • PowerShell (Temporary): $env:STEAM_API_KEY="your_key_here"
    • Command Prompt (Temporary): set STEAM_API_KEY=your_key_here
  3. Configure Steam ID: Set your Steam ID in the YAML options.

This features objective templates for different levels of mastery across your Steam library:

Game Completion: "Beat Elden Ring" Progress Goals: "Unlock at least 25% of the achievements in Hollow Knight" Mastery: "Unlock all the achievements in Vampire Survivors"

Features:

  • Automatic Library Fetching: Pulls your owned games directly from Steam
  • Playtime Filtering: Filter games by minimum or maximum playtime (e.g., only games you've played at least 2 hours, or haven't played too much)
  • Smart Filtering: Automatically excludes games without community visible stats (achievements)
  • Exclusions: Option to manually exclude specific games or App IDs
  • Percentage Ranges: Configurable min/max percentages for achievement progress objectives

Watchlist

A meta-game in which the options generated will be films and TV shows from the player's watchlist, paired with appropriate viewing actions. Some default options are provided for clarity, but can easily be overwritten with whatever the player desires.

This features separate objective templates for films and television content, with actions tailored to each medium:

Films: "WATCH Film Title" or "FINISH Documentary Title" TV Shows: "BINGE TV Series Title" or "CATCH UP Miniseries Title"

The following modules and systemic improvements were recently added and standardized:

• Brotato: New arena roguelite module with objectives across character unlocks, weapon synergy runs, danger level completions, boss wave clears, economy scaling, and endless experimentation. • Circadian Dice: Dice-building roguelike objectives for scenario clears, class mastery, relic unlocks, high-score thresholds, challenge modifiers, and perfect-turn efficiency goals. • Crypt of the NecroDancer: Rhythm roguelike module covering zone progression, character victories, boss defeats, speed/score cadence challenges, item/shop interactions, mode variants, and DLC content (Amplified, Synchrony, Hatsune Miku, Shovel Knight) gated behind new Toggle options. • Chess.com Integration: Competitive chess objectives including daily puzzle streaks, rapid/blitz/bullet rating milestones, accuracy goals, opening exploration, time control diversity, and win-condition variety. • Caves of Qud: Deep science-fantasy roguelike coverage for mutation acquisition, faction reputation, exploration tiers, artifact identification, survival milestones, and legendary creature hunts. Limb dismemberment moved from objective list into an optional constraint for cleaner generation. • Binding of Isaac (Rebirth) Modded Characters: Added an OptionSet allowing user-defined modded characters that integrate seamlessly into character victory and achievement templates. • Toggle Standardization: Older DefaultOnToggle usages converted to consistent Toggle patterns (e.g., Brotato DLC, NecroDancer DLC) with property access for clarity (self.include_amplified_dlc.value).

These changes improve extensibility (user-supplied characters), clarity (uniform toggle access), and accuracy (constraint vs objective classification).

Brotato

An arena wave-based roguelite module focused on weapon builds, character diversity, scaling economy, and escalating enemy waves.
