lets start with this file. I would love to help you more but i don't have enough information how to setup the environment/hardware to make this working.

@tmecklem it would be great to know which hw do i need, then i can install it and sync with pump and then create better documentation

Thanks for the contribution and getting this conversation started. Part of the reason this is still a little difficult to answer is that the easy to acquire hardware compatible with this isn't quite out yet (see http://openaps.readthedocs.io/en/master/docs/Gear%20Up/edison.html#hardware-information-for-pi-based-setups-with-the-explorer-hat). However, since earlier this year, there's a simulated loop that runs out of the box, so it's possible to get started and contribute before the hardware is available. Would you mind if I committed to your branch and added some information to the README? That seems like the easiest way.
