This repository is part of a beta version of the Antarctic mapping project.

Therefore, the classification script does not include the training samples or the Sentinel image IDs used in the mosaic creation.

About

This repository contains the scripts used to classify the ice-free areas of the Antarctic continent.

It is recommended to read the ATBD on Antarctic mapping beforehand, as it provides information that helps in understanding the scripts.

The classification of ice-free areas was divided into two parts:

1. Ice-Free Area Classification

   • Script: ice_free_area_classification.js
   • Uses Sentinel-2 images and a Random Forest classifier to map ice-free areas on the continent and surrounding islands.
   • Steps:
     • Filtering the Sentinel-2 image collection
     • Resampling and creating the image mosaic
     • Training and applying the Random Forest classifier
     • Water masking using the DEM and Band 9
     • Generation of the final ice-free area mosaic

2. Vegetation Classification

   • Script: vegetation_classification.js
   • Calculates NDVI from Sentinel-2 images and classifies vegetation within the ice-free areas.
   • Steps:
     • NDVI calculation
     • Creation of a quality mosaic
     • Classification using NDVI thresholds and ice-free areas
     • Masking oceanic areas using the DEM and Band 9
     • Generation of the final vegetation map
