Sorry, I accidentally closed the first pull request (#10), reopening again.

The pull request is a bit larger than expected. It contains two features:

  1. An optimized string representation: buffer shares the memory with a couple of pointers. This optimization not only improves memory usage, but also speeds up a lot of string operations (mostly due to better cache hit rate).
  2. A lot of new member functions and operators to increase compatibility with std::string.
