To alert the user to these two types of potential error when inferring MIRU-VNTR from long reads, a modification the MIRUReader code so that a warning was issued when allele assignment was supported by < 3 amplimers (default and modifiable) and/or when two allele values coexisted at the same position with a frequency < 0.6 (default and modifiable).
Once these alerts are identified, caution should be exercised before accepting that allele as correct
