Code Review
This pull request introduces a critical check in the setWatermark function to prevent the checkpoint timestamp from regressing. It adds a panic if a new checkpoint timestamp is older than the current one, ensuring monotonic advancement. The change is correct and improves the robustness of the system. My feedback focuses on improving the logging format for better observability, suggesting a switch to structured logging instead of using fmt.Sprintf.

For better observability and consistency with the logging style in this file, it's recommended to use structured logging with zap.Fields instead of fmt.Sprintf for the panic message. This makes the log fields queryable in log management systems.
After this change, the fmt import will become unused and can be removed.
| log.Panic(fmt.Sprintf("checkpoint regressed: old=%d new=%d", old, newWatermark.CheckpointTs)) | |
| log.Panic("checkpoint regressed", zap.Uint64("old", old), zap.Uint64("new", newWatermark.CheckpointTs)) |
