Summary of Changes

Hello @hongyunyan, I'm Gemini Code Assist1! I'm currently reviewing this pull request and will post my feedback shortly. In the meantime, here's a summary to help you and other reviewers quickly get up to speed!

This pull request introduces a crucial defensive mechanism within the Maintainer component to safeguard against any backward movement of the CheckpointTs watermark. By implementing a panic-level check, it ensures data integrity and consistency, immediately halting operations if a regression in the checkpoint timestamp is detected. This change is a robust measure to protect against potential data corruption or out-of-order processing, reinforcing the reliability of the system's state tracking.

Highlights

  • CheckpointTs Regression Prevention: Added a critical check within the setWatermark function to prevent the CheckpointTs from ever decreasing. If a new CheckpointTs is found to be less than the current one, the system will now trigger a panic, indicating a severe data consistency issue.

🧠 New Feature in Public Preview: You can now enable Memory to help Gemini Code Assist learn from your team's feedback. This makes future code reviews more consistent and personalized to your project's style. Click here to enable Memory in your admin console.

Code Review

This pull request introduces a critical check in the setWatermark function to prevent the checkpoint timestamp from regressing. It adds a panic if a new checkpoint timestamp is older than the current one, ensuring monotonic advancement. The change is correct and improves the robustness of the system. My feedback focuses on improving the logging format for better observability, suggesting a switch to structured logging instead of using fmt.Sprintf.

if newWatermark.CheckpointTs != math.MaxUint64 {
old := m.watermark.CheckpointTs
if newWatermark.CheckpointTs < old {
log.Panic(fmt.Sprintf("checkpoint regressed: old=%d new=%d", old, newWatermark.CheckpointTs))

For better observability and consistency with the logging style in this file, it's recommended to use structured logging with zap.Fields instead of fmt.Sprintf for the panic message. This makes the log fields queryable in log management systems.

After this change, the fmt import will become unused and can be removed.

Suggested change
log.Panic(fmt.Sprintf("checkpoint regressed: old=%d new=%d", old, newWatermark.CheckpointTs))
log.Panic("checkpoint regressed", zap.Uint64("old", old), zap.Uint64("new", newWatermark.CheckpointTs))
