Experiment: just merge everything

This is just an experiment to merge #542, #556, and #560 into main and then see if it works.

We should not merge this. But it should give an idea of how close we are to 4.0 support.

Check list:

• Add an entry to the changelog
• Squash all commits into a single one
• Describe your PR, link issues, etc.

This suggests we could land those open PRs and be ready to cut a release. Now to look at docs ...
